Mount Airy, NC is one of six finalists running to be named the “Friendliest” town in the nation.
Walla Walla Washington, Valdosta Georgia, Lake Havasu City Arizona, Woodward Oklahoma and Nacogdoches Texas, and Mount Airy North Carolina were named the top six friendliest towns in the country based on votes collected by Rand McNally and USA Today.
Sometime between now and July 22nd, teams from Rand McNally and USA Today will visit each town and based on their experiences the “friendliest” will be named and featured in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas.
Hometown to Actor Andy Griffith, Mount Airy is the inspiration for the town of Mayberry on the popular ‘60s hit TV series and retains the small town charm and warmth depicted in the fictional town a few miles from Mount Pilot NC (adapted from nearby Pilot Mountain).
From Floyd’s City Barber Shop, the Old Mayberry Jail, Snappy Lunch (don’t miss the pork chop sandwich) and Andy’s childhood home to museums, festivals, bluegrass music and nearby wineries in the Yadkin Valley, Mount Airy rolls out the welcome mat and is the definition of friendly, generous and warm southern hospitality.
